Searching BIOSIS Previews 

 

  1. Choose BIOSIS Previews from the menu of database options
  2. Click "Go" next to the dropdown menu.
  3. For a subject or keyword search, click "Subject"
  4. Type subject or keyword terms into the textbox.

Example: For articles on "lichens in California", key in: lichen# california (the truncation symbol in CDL databases is "#").

  1. Click "Search" The search results screen will state the number of citations retrieved, if any, and options available for display.
  2. Change display options as needed; e.g. from the default "Short" display to "Long"; from the default format to "Abstract and Text"; from "all libraries" to "UC Los Angeles (All Libraries)". Click "DISPLAY".
  3. To select multiple items from the list for printing, e-mailing, or downloading, mark each chosen article by clicking in the small box following the citation.
  4. Next, depending on which of the above options you have chosen, follow the directions below:

Printing Search Results

 

1.     Before printing, purchase a print card from the machines just inside the entrance to the Biomedical Library. Only cards purchased for UCLA printers and copiers will work. Follow instructions for purchasing and/or adding value to the card.

2.     Be sure to check your computer workstation to find out which printer you will be using, Printer 1 or Printer 2.  Also read the printing instructions posted at the workstation.

3.     To select one or multiple items for printing from the search-results list, mark each chosen article by clicking in the small box following the citation.

4.     Click the PRINT option following the list of BIOSIS Previews citations. Follow onscreen instructions.

5.     You might have to make up an identifier and a password for each print job you send to the printer. (Keep them simple so you will remember them). You don't have to be a UCLA student or need a UCLA ID number to do this.

6.     The printers will hold your jobs for nearly an hour to give you time to do your research.

7.     Follow directions at the printer to insert your card, select your job, and enter the identifier and password, and print your items.

8.     Click on "Logoff" to end your session and retrieve your card.

 

E-Mailing Search Results to Your E-Mail Account

 

1.     Select one or multiple items for e-mailing from the search-results list by clicking in the small box following each chosen citation.

2.     Click the MAIL option below your list of BIOSIS Previews citations. Follow onscreen instructions.

3.     Choose options, such as length, format, and location.

4.     Type your complete e-mail address into the box indicated, and submit the

e-mail.

 

Downloading Search Results to a Disk

 

    1. Insert a 3½" IBM/PC-preformatted disk into the computer workstation's "A" drive.
    2. Select each onscreen item for downloading by clicking in the small box near each chosen article ciation.
    3. Follow onscreen directions for choosing options and downloading.
    4. Click FILE and then "Save As"
    5. Choose downloading options: send the save to the "A" drive; rename the file if you wish (e. g. CalifLichens); choose to save in: html only, text, etc.
    6. If your workstation doesn't allow menu-choice access to the "A" drive, type in the path in the file-name box by keying in:

a:\

plus the name you have chosen for your file. Example: a:\CalifLichens
