Centers for Disease Control Disease Information: Anthrax

Comprehensive general health information about anthrax including answers to "what is anthrax?" "what is the anthrax vaccine?" and other frequently asked questions.

Center for the Study of Bioterrorism

Hotline information on emergency tactics for dealing with an anthrax threat, including telephone numbers for the Centers for Disease Control; tips on how to recognize suspicious letters and packages, and information on how to report suspected bioterrorism attacks.

Center for Biosecurity

The Center for Biosecurity is an independent, nonprofit organization of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). The Center works to affect policy and practice in ways that lessen the illness, death, and civil disruption that would follow large-scale epidemics, whether they occur naturally or result from the use of a biological weapon.

Chemical and Biological Weapons

An exhaustive list of links and documents geared to information on bioweaponry and chemical warfare. Sites deal with such topics as anthrax, the anthrax vaccine, small pox, the plague, public health responses to the threat of bioterror, and food safety.

Bacillus Anthracis and Anthrax

Thorough discussion of the anthrax bacillus from a biological-sciences point of view, with illustrations of the bacterium. Includes a description of the symptoms of anthrax, including cutaneous, gastrointestinal, and inhalation anthrax. Treatment of anthrax and anthrax as a biological weapon are briefly discussed.

MEDLINEplus Health Information: Anthrax

This page from the National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE provides up-to-date news on anthrax-related occurrences and research, as well as background information on anthrax itself.  It includes information on  prevention and screening, clinical trials, diagnosis and symptoms, and other discussions related to anthrax. The drug Cipro is described as well as the use of doxycycline and penicillin G under the heading "Treatment".

MEDLINEplus Health Information: Biological and Chemical Weapons

Broader in scope in relation to bioterrorism than the anthrax site, this MEDLINE page discusses biological warfare in general as well as anthrax in particular.  It offers news updates, overview information on such topics as bioterrorism, chemical agents of warfare, and illnesses that could result from biological warfare. The section headed "Specific Conditions/Aspects" offers information about food safety, botulism and bioterrorism, smallpox, pneumonic plague, and brucellosis, as well as other related topics.            

CDC Division of Bacterial and Mycotic Diseases

Answers to frequently asked questions about the "acute infectious disease caused by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis, "known for its potential use in biological warfare. Topics include transmission, symptoms, treatment, and vaccination.

Journal of the American Medical Association Bioterorism Articles

A collection of articles published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) about anthrax, smallpox, ebola, plague and Yersinia pestis, botulinum toxin, brucella, hemorrhagic fever viruses (HFV), and tularemia as well as more general topics.

Provides over 25,000 encyclopedic entries covering a variety of subject areas.

Science Full Text Select
Coverage includes popular science magazines as well as professional journals. Also covers The New York Times Science Section. Full text coverage begins in January 1995.

CINAHL Plus with Full Text
Provides complete coverage of the professional literature in nursing, 14 allied health disciplines and health sciences librarianship. In addition, there are over 560 journals in full text.
