U. S. Department of
Agriculture: Agricultural Biotechnology
Along with The Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug
Administration, the USDA has the responsibility of regulating
biotechnology in the United States. This site explains the agency's role
and presents laws and legislation relating to biotechnology as well as
providing answers to frequently asked questions.
U. S. Food and
Drug Administration: CFSAN: Biotechnology
The USFDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition's site offers
information for keeping up to date on biotechnology. Access to
announcements of biotechnology meetings, symposia, proposals, programs,
and legislation is provided, as well as discussions of regulations, food
labeling, and other related information.
National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)
Overwhelmed by the rapidly developing biotechnology field? Turn here for a "better understanding of
molecular processes affecting human health and disease." Hot Spots offers users several resources about
studying and mapping genes; About NCBI includes a primer covering bioinformatics, molecular modeling,
phylogenetics, and other fields. There are also lists of tutorials and courses, glossaries, and links to
Web sites and databases with relevant materials.
Access Excellence: The
National Health Museum
This site features essays on various biotechnology and bioethics
topics, including an overview of the history of biotechnology and
discussions of current issues and the practical application of
biotechnology. Also includes timelines, "profiles of some of the
influential individuals who have helped build the biotechnology
industry," information about biotechnology careers, and a graphics
gallery of "diagrams and information about complex scientific principles

International Food Information Council
Foundation
The IFIC site presents information on food safety and nutrition, a
glossary of pertinent terms, a list of publications and other significant
information. Topics treated include, among others, food additives and food
allergies. A disclaimer states that the Foundation's activities are
supported by several large food industry companies.

The following Santa Monica College Library online databases may contain
material relevant to biotechnology. Databases may include magazine,

Philosophy and Religion Collection Covers such topics as epistemology, political philosophy,

Business Source Premier Business Source Premier provides full text for nearly 8200 serials.
Coverage includes all subject areas related to business.
Regional Business News Regional Business News provides full text coverage for
regional business publications. Includes coverage of 75 business
journals, newspapers and newswires from all metropolitan and
rural areas within the United States.
Science Full Text Select Coverage includes popular science magazines as well as professional journals. Also covers The New York Times Science Section. Full text coverage begins in January 1995.
National Newspapers (U.S.) Searchable index for recent issues of the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and the Christian Science Monitor. Full-text for newer issues and citations for older materials. More information on coverage
Newspaper Source (Regional, National and International) Provides selected full text for 25 national (U.S.) and international newspapers. The database also contains full text television & radio news transcripts, and selected full text for more than 200 regional (U.S.) newspapers.
Encyclopedia Americana Includes 45,000 articles, plus thousands of hypertext
links to web sites featuring additional data. It is updated quarterly.
Encyclopedia, Funk and Wagnalls New World Provides over 25,000 encyclopedic entries covering a variety of subject areas.
Military and Government Collection Designed to offer current news pertaining to all branches of the military and government, provides cover-to-cover full text for more than 350 journals and periodicals and indexing and abstracts for more than 450 titles.
