Websites on corporal punishment
The following websites will help you with your research on corporal
punishment:
Society
for Adolescent Medicine (SAM): Corporal Punishment in Schools
SAM's Position Paper defines corporal punishment as
"intentional application of physical pain as a method of changing
behavior", and lists some forms of it as "hitting, slapping, punching,
kicking" and several other forms. The Paper goes on to give corporal
punishment's historical background, a brief discussion of where and how
often it occurs in the U. S., and an assessment of national law regarding
corporal punishment. The Paper also makes its case against this form of
punishment, advancing the argument that violence is the message sent by
corporal punishment. The Paper also offers its alternatives to corporal
punishment.
The
Natural Child Project: Influence of Corporal Punishment on Crime
The Project's motto is "all children behave as well as
they are treated", and this tenet is well-exemplified in this document.
Giving a brief history of flogging as a punishment for criminals in the U.
S., it goes on to assert that only children are subjected to this class of
punishment today. In a chart titled the "after effects of physical
punishment", a study of prisoners, juvenile delinquents, school drop-outs,
college freshmen, and successful professionals, the document clearly shows
a link between frequency and degree of physical punishment to societal
outcomes for the populations studied.
Project No Spank
A resource for parents, students, educators, education policymakers, healthcare
providers, children's advocates, and all others who are concerned with the safety
and wellbeing of children.
Corporal Punishment:
Myths and Realities
The National PTA, the largest volunteer child advocacy
group in the U. S., opposes corporal punishment as a policy in schools.
This site offers a listing of prevalent beliefs or "myths" about school
corporal punishment and then briefly "debunks" each one. Example: To the
"myth" that "corporal punishment is used only as a last resort", the
"reality" is asserted to be that "corporal punishment is often the first
response even for minor infractions".
American Academy of
Pediatrics: Corporal Punishment in Schools
The AAP's concise policy statement on school corporal
punishment, urging the legal abolishment of corporal punishment and the
institution of alternative managements of student behavior.
American Academy of
Pediatrics Corporal Punishment in Schools Chart
An alphabetically-by-state listing showing
which states had banished corporal punishment in schools and which had
not, the date it was abolished, and brief comments.
