Websites on elections

The following websites will help you with your research on elections:

California elections

California Voter Foundation( CVF)

 CVF is a "nonprofit, non-partisan organization dedicated to... [providing] the public with access to the information needed to participate in public life...", and their site offers data on new district maps, statewide ballot measures, candidates running for office in California, and much more.

League of Women Voters of California

The League, in existence since 1920, "is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization of women and men which never supports or opposes candidates or political parties." Information on the April 9, 2002 election in Los Angeles county includes information about candidates and ballot measures. In addition, there is much information on how to contact representatives and archival information on past California elections.

Smart Voter by the League of Women Voters: 2002 Elections

Searches available include locating your polling place, results of past elections, and information about individual candidates. This site also offers information on 2002 elections by California county as well as archived information on elections since November 1997.

Vote2000

The Secretary of state of California offers information on the November 2000 election. It presents election returns, absentee ballot count, a voter information guide, information on the Electoral College, and, in the "Propositions" section, an official list of candidates for this election.

United States/Nationwide elections

Election Statistics

"Since 1920, the Clerk of the House (of Representatives) has collected and published the official vote counts for federal elections from the official sources among the various states and territories." The statistics, in both HTML and PDF formats, are listed by year, in reverse chronological order.

Election Collection 2000: An Internet Library

The site archives around 1000 websites devoted to to covering the controversial Election of 2000. Commissioned by the Library of Congress, the pages in the site cover a time period from August 2000 to January 21, 2001. The directory of the collection includes web sites under such headings as Reform Party sites, Democratic Party sites, Green Party sites; news, vote trading, and even humor sites.

Election 2000 Materials

Stanford Law School supplies information on the national Election of 2000. Featuring the Supreme Court and the states of California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New Mexico, and Texas, the site concentrates on legal issues surrounding the controversial election. 

Electionline.Org

The site, produced by the Election Reform information Project, provides up-to-date information on topics concerned with election reform, including data on election administration procedures, analyses, and reports.

National Institute on Money in State Politics: Follow the Money

The database offers access to information on which persons or entities contributed to which elections, by state.  Researchers can also find names of contributors to around 115 interest groups.

 

International elections 

Elections around the World

This site concentrates on presenting information on worldwide elections country-by-country. It offers access to that information also through sections on "results around the world", "parties on the net",  and "parliaments on the net". Disclaimers state that "party orientation labels" are the editors' own.

Elections and Electoral Systems by Country 

 A listing of websites on many countries, with links to information on current and past elections. There is also a generous roundup of more general websites offering data on the world electoral scene.

National Newspapers (U.S.)
Searchable index for recent issues of the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and the Christian Science Monitor. Full-text for newer issues and citations for older materials. More information on coverage

Newspaper Source (Regional, National and International)
Provides selected full text for 25 national (U.S.) and international newspapers. The database also contains full text television & radio news transcripts, and selected full text for more than 200 regional (U.S.) newspapers.

Ethnic NewsWatch
News, culture and history from the newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press -- English and Spanish language.

ABI/INFORM
Business news and information from more than 410 full text journals. Coverage includes all subject areas related to business.

Business Source Premier
Business Source Premier provides full text for nearly 8200 serials. Coverage includes all subject areas related to business.

Regional Business News
Regional Business News provides full text coverage for regional business publications. Includes coverage of 75 business journals, newspapers and newswires from all metropolitan and rural areas within the United States.

JSTOR
Back issues of over 300 scholarly journals in a wide variety of disciplines: African American Studies, African Studies, Anthropology, Archeology, Art and Architecture, Asian Studies, Ecology, Economics, Education, Finance, Geography, History, Language & Literature, Latin American Studies, Mathematics, Music, Middle East Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, Population Studies, Slavic Studies, Sociology and Statistics.

Philosophy and Religion Collection
Covers such topics as epistemology, political philosophy, philosophy of language, moral philosophy and the history of philosophy, world religions, biblical studies, religious history. Includes more than 300 full text journals.

RAND California
An extensive database on California and its cities and counties. Includes information on California public policy issues, statistics on business, employment, population, real estate, and crime rates, school test scores and monthly reports on the California economy.

NetLibrary
Over 10,000 electronic books (e-books) from leading university, trade and professional publishers. Titles across all subject areas. Includes an extensive collection of e-books in the public domain, featuring classics in literature and history. (One maximum simultaneous user per book)
