genetic engineering

This guide is an introduction to the research process that, while not being an exhaustive list of information resources available, should be helpful in getting started in your research about genetic engineering.  Below you will find pointers to suggested research terms about genetic engineering, materials in the library catalog about genetic engineering, websites relevant to genetic engineering, and links to library databases that contain information about genetic engineering.  Please use our email reference service, contact us at (310) 434-4254, or visit us in the library at the reference desk if you need further assistance.

Suggested Research Terms

One of the really helpful things when searching for information about a topic is a short list of terms related to a topic.  We think the following terms will help with your research about genetic engineering:
  • animal genetic engineering
  • plant genetic engineering
  • bioethics
  • genetically modified foods
  • transgenic organisms
  • genomes
  • biotechnology
  • eugenics
  • recombinant dna

Websites on genetic engineering

The following websites will help you with your research on genetic engineering:

Genetic Engineering
An introductory treatment of the topic of genetic engineering, it offers a definition of the term, discussions of the Human Genome Project, gene therapy, biotechnology and genetically-engineered agriculture. Useful for a basic overview of several aspects of the genetic engineering debate.

U. S. Department of Agriculture: Agricultural Biotechnology
Along with The Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration, the USDA has the responsibility of regulating biotechnology in the United States. This site explains the agency's role and presents laws and legislation relating to biotechnology as well as providing answers to frequently asked questions.

Conceiving a Clone
A useful ThinkQuest site, this page gives a chronology of cloning and genetic engineering milestones. There are visual aids to methods of cloning, and speculations as to the future of cloning.

GeneWatch UK
GeneWatch UK is an independent British organization "concerned with the ethics and risks of genetic engineering. It questions how, why and whether the use of genetic technologies should proceed...." Be aware that the organization is a self-publisher of many of the publications offered on the site.

Greenpeace Consumer Networks
This well-known environmentally-concerned organization offers its take on genetic engineering in these pages. Opposed to many aspects of genetic engineering as it applies to the food supply, the organization discusses that opposition.  It characterizes its stance on the debate as opposition to "the irreversible releases of genetically released organisms into the environment because they carry unnecessary risks and bring unforeseeable damage to the environment, human health and sustainable agriculture."

Genetic Engineering News
Covers the industrial biotechnology, biopharmaceutical, agricultural, chemical, enzyme, and environmental fields.

GE Danger forward
Genetic Engineering and Its Dangers Compiled by Dr Ron Epstein, Philosophy Department, College of Humanities, San Francisco State University, San Francisco, CA.

Dangers of Genetic EngineeringCampaign for mandatory labeling ...
Do you have a choice? Genetic engineering is the largest food experiment in the
history of the world. ... Is genetic engineering safe for you and your family?

GM Food: Special Report
This site examines the implications, questions, ethics, and unknowns of genetic modification of food, which include gene therapy, fetal cell research, transgenic plants, and genetic engineering. Some articles cover specific projects, such as the quest to produce a blue rose, while others elaborate general concerns relating to genetic manipulation. From the New Scientist magazine.

Biotechnology Information Center
This searchable site, a service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, provides access to a variety of information services and publications covering many aspects of agricultural and environmental biotechnology. Specific topics include theory and techniques of genetic engineering, plant and animal genetics, monoclonal antibodies, single cell proteins, food processing, biomass applications and risk assessment and bioethics.
