World Factbook: Literacy
The World Factbook, a publication of the CIA, offers brief and basic
statistics on literacy for many nations.
National Center for Education
Statistics (NCES): National Assessments of Adult Literacy
"The National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) is a nationally
representative and continuing assessment of English language literacy
skills of American adults."
The assessments seek to "describe the status of adult literacy in
the United States; report on national trends; and identify relationships
between literacy and selected characteristics of adults."
NCES: Defining
Literacy and Sample Items
This site offers the NCES basic definition of literacy, examines the
"three literacies" with which NCES is concerned (prose literacy,
document literacy, and quantitative literacy), and discusses literacy with
sample items.
National
Institute for Literacy: Facts and Statistics
Offers facts, statistics, and overviews regarding the state of literacy
in the U. S.

ERIC ERIC, the Educational Resource Information Center contains more than 2,200 digests along with references for additional information and citations and abstracts from over 980 educational and education-related journals.
Professional Development Collection Over 550 full-text journals of interest to professional educators, librarians and education researchers. Offers information on a wide variety of educational topics ranging from children's health and development to pedagogical theory and practice. This database also contains more than 200 educational reports.
Academic Search Premier, MasterFile Premier Academic Search Premier and MasterFile Premier provide
full text for over 6200 periodicals including full text
for more than 3,500 peer-reviewed journals. Coverage spans
virtually every area of academic study and offers information
dating as far back as 1975.
National Newspapers (U.S.) Searchable index for recent issues of the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and the Christian Science Monitor. Full-text for newer issues and citations for older materials. More information on coverage
Newspaper Source (Regional, National and International) Provides selected full text for 25 national (U.S.) and international newspapers. The database also contains full text television & radio news transcripts, and selected full text for more than 200 regional (U.S.) newspapers.

RAND California An extensive database on California and its cities and counties. Includes information on California public policy issues, statistics on business, employment, population, real estate, and crime rates, school test scores and monthly reports on the California economy.
