Ad*Access: Beauty and Hygiene
A project of Duke University, the "Ad*Access Project... presents images and database information for over 7,000 advertisements printed in U.S. and Canadian newspapers and magazines between 1911 and 1955."

Of special interest to the topic is the "Beauty and Hygiene" subject area, offering fascinating pictorial commentary on how women viewed themselves, were viewed by the culture, and were both marketed and marketed to via advertising.

About-face
About-Face promotes positive self-esteem in girls and women of all ages, sizes, races and backgrounds through a spirited approach to media education, outreach and activism." Among their goals: "to encourage a healthy skepticism about media images and the messages of popular culture'; and "to empower young people to feel confident about their individuality, their abilities and their bodies". The site features a "Gallery of Offenders", with mostly-advertising images considered demeaning to women, and a "Gallery of Winners", advertisers that feature "positive images of women".

CDC: Women and Smoking; A Report of the Surgeon General 2001
This U. S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) web page offers information on women and smoking, discussing from a health point of view the way tobacco-industry advertising targets women to promote sales of cigarettes. Topics discussed include: history of advertising strategies; current advertising strategies; sponsorship/promotions; global advertising strategies.

Children, Adolescents, and Advertising
Policy statement of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), detailing the effects of various types of advertising on children and adolescents. Includes responsible sexual behavior as well as cigarette, beer, and wine advertising.

National Newspapers (U.S.)
